Schools 7s Invitational squads named

The four provincial teams who will play in the Schools 7s Invitational on Saturday, 5 October 2019 have named their squads.

The quartet, namely Falcons, Leopards, Pumas and Tau (a Johannesburg-based schools invitational team) will play in a round-robin format during the Varsity 7s festival at Pirates Rugby Club. With the teams being comprised of players from various schools it's difficult to judge who could emerge as the champions come Saturday afternoon.

What is clear though is that an intriguing afternoon of sevens rugby awaits. Firstly, all four teams comprise players who played at the prestigious U-18 Craven Week, and will see the Schools 7s Invitational as another opportunity to display their talent to scouts - whether it be for the 15-man game or the increasingly popular sevens rugby circuit.

The Tau squad, with five players who represented either of the Golden Lions teams at the Craven Week boast the most players who featured at the tournament in Bloemfontein. Falcons have three, while Leopards and Pumas each have two.

In terms of how the tournament at Pirates may well unfold, it's interesting to note that Tau have nine players form Monument in Krugersdorp, and so should have familiarity on their side. Falcons, on the other hand, have seven players from Dr EG Jansen in Boksburg so will argue they have same intimate knowledge of what could be their strengths and weaknesses on Saturday.

Of course, the game of sevens rugby often comes down to individual brilliance so trying to predict anything could be a futile exercise. Thus, the ideal way would be to make your way to Pirates Club in Greenside to see for yourself...
